July 2009: The “Stoclet Palace” in Brussels is inscribed on
the UNESCO’s WORLD HERITAGE LIST

Stoclet Palace in Brussels

The “Stoclet Palace” in Brussels, a private house ocated on Avenue de Tervuren, is an Art Deco architectural masterpiece built between 1905 and 1911 by Austrian archtect Joseph Hoffmann and decorated by the artists of the Wiener Werkstätte.
The interior of the dining room is richly decorated by the magnificent twin mosaic frieze “The Tree of Life” created by the famous Art Nouveau painter and art designer, Gustav KLIMT (1862-1918).

"From Art Nouveau to Art Deco"

During the first 4 weekends of October 2009, the 5th Biennial Art Nouveau in Brussels is an unique Event that offers the opportunity to visit more than fifty interiors of buildings in Brussels, on the theme of “From Art Nouveau to Art Deco”.
This year’s Biennial Event will also include Art Deco and will enable the public to discover some of the city’s architectural masterpieces of the years 1920-1940.
Discovery of the architectural variety and the richness of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, the two major styles in Brussels: splendid private mansions will again be opened to the public and access to schools, industrial buildings, public buildings, cafes, cinemas, hotels and shops...

The guided tours of these interiors during the Biennial Art Nouveau Event will enable members of the public to see and discover these remarkable buldings and their heritage.

Major exhibition dedicated to French fashion designer, Madeleine Vionnet (who donated many dresses, dress patterns and photo albums to Les Arts Décoratifs) and to her exceptional collection of avant-garde designs and selected from her major works between 1912 and 1939 .
Madeleine Vionnet’s entire career was marked by her constant quest for freedom in extremely refined designs close to antique drapery, which continue to fascinate conempoary fashion designers.

Exhibition of major art works by famous Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939). around 250 large paintings, pastel drawings, posters, lithographies, illustrations and jewelry works from public and private collections. Contemporary of Victor Horta, Alphonse Mucha was influenced by Symbolism and by the social aspects of William Morris' Arts and Crafts Movement and he developed his own aesthetic ideals to elevate the decorative elements to the status of works of art. His original style became the hallmark of his time and is also known as "Mucha Style".

"Tiffany Girls. A New Light on Tiffany"

Exhibition of works from the studios of Louis Comfort Tiffany. In addition to Tiffany’s famous lamps, the show includes stained-glass windows, mosaics, enamelled ‘objets de luxe’ and documentary material.
Louis Comfort Tiffany(1848-1933) was the most important American Art Nouveau designer of applied art, creator of the famous and beautiful stained-glass lamps and windows representing decorative designs inspired by nature, flowers and dragonflies.

Tiffany Girls : a group of talented female designers behind Louis Comfort Tiffany, to whom many successful Tiffany patterns can now be attributed. The ‘Tiffany Girls’ worked in the Women’s Glass Cutting Department under Clara Driscoll (1861-1944).

Singer Collection : exhibition affords a unique opportunity to situate a masterpiece in the Singer collection, the large Tiffany hanging lamp Laburnum.

In the fall of 2009, the exhibition will be presented at the Museum Villa Stuck in Munich, Germany.

Exhibition of magnificent jewelry and major art works by the most representative designers and artists of Art Nouveau jewelry. Selected from the finest American private collection, Imperishable Beauty features over one hundred works from France, Germany, Austria and the United States by major art nouveau designers and jewelers, including René Lalique, Philippe Wolfers et Tiffany & Co.
Moreover, textiles by William Morris, posters by Alphonse Mucha, Tiffany glass, silver, and ceramics from the Art Museum’s permanent collection will accompany the jewelry.

2008: Exhibition of around 120 Jewelry works by the most representative designers and artists of Art Nouveau jewelry. Highly skilled in traditional jewelry techniques, these Art Nouveau artists were inspired by the work of the Pre-Raphaelites, by the paintings and poetry of the Symbolism movement. They represented and interpreted astonishing natural floral motives such as orchids or lilies and impressive dragonflies and butterflies. Landmark of this exhibition and focus point of the extraordinary relationship between Viennese artists and Brussels, is the astonishing "Palais Stoclet" with its variations and infinite beauty of Secession style details: it was built from 1905 to 1911 for the Belgian engeneer Adolphe Stoclet by Austrian architect Josef Hoffmann and decorated by Wiener Werkstaette artists and by Gustav Klimt.

2006-2007: Exhibition on Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933), the famous American Art Nouveau artist and "Laurelton Hall", his country estate in Oyster Bay, New York, which he created around 1905. Laurelton Hall was his "total art project" and Louis Comfort Tiffany designed all the architectural elements and interior design and furniture of the house as well as the gardens. The exhibition presents architectural elements and interior features which survived the house tragic destruction in 1957 as well as Tiffany's personal collections of his own works: stained glass, paintings, ceramics, vases and art ware from his own collections Japanese, Chinese, and Native American works of art.

The treasures of Art Nouveau of the the Museum's permanent collection echoes Alphonse Mucha's exhibition: Gustave Serrurier-Bovy's furniture, works of Mucha fellow artists, such as Gauguin, Rodin, Fernand Khnopff, Théo Van Rysselberghe and Alfred Stevens.

Exceptional exhibition of 20 masterpieces of Art Nouveau, selected among the fabulous "Gillion Crowet Collection": Gallé and Daum vases, Horta, Majorelle furniture, Delville, Mellery, Khnopff paintings and the sculptures in glass, marble or bronze of Cros, Wolfers, Gallé, Mucha.

In 2008, the complete GILLION CROWET donation, including 300 masterpieces mainly in Art Nouveau style, will be exhibited in the 19th century section of the Musée (renovated for the occasion).

The Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, BOZAR, presented the exhibition together with the MAK from Vienna, dedicated to the Wiener Werkstätte, the Viennese Workshop of the decorative arts. Over a thousand of authentic and original pieces from all over the world offer visitors a chronological vision of the 30 years (1903-1932) of activity and creation by this Jugendstil movement of art and handicrafts.
While presenting its ideology and its artistic program, this unique exhibition opens a dialogue with similar international models, both past and present and the "Stoclet House" is virtually placed in the ideal centre of it.

The finest example of a total work of art produced by the creativity and the marvelous works of the Wiener Werkstätte and its Art Nouveau artists, Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser and Gustav Klimt, is unquestionably the Palais Stoclet in Brussels, the most remarkable collective work of international Art Nouveau.

 2006 EXHIBITION: L'ART NOUVEAU - LA MAISON BING - Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts in Bruxelles

In 2006, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Brussels organized a large-scale exhibition on the origins of Art Nouveau in France, seen through the eyes of the art dealer and collector Siegfried BING (1838-1905).
His vision and goal was to promote a modern style by bringing together the visual and the applied arts in innovative interiors with a contemporary design. The name of this art galery "l'Art Nouveau", created in Paris in 1895, gave name and international fame to the most important european Art Movement around 1900.
